Littlehampton strike staff ‘optimistic’... but more protests planned

TEACHERS involved in yesterday’s strike action (Wednesday, April 17) at The Littlehampton Academy feel “optimistic” about the result of their protest, a spokesman for the National Teachers Union (NUT) has said.

However, it looks likely more protest action will take place next week, an NUT spokesman has said.

Serious disruption was caused at the school, in Fitzalan Road, as around a third of the academy’s 123 teachers took part in the action, against mounting concerns over the working conditions at the institution.

The protest was called by both the NUT and the NASUWT union, which together represent around 75 per cent of teachers at the site.

Speaking today (Thursday, April 18), David Thomas secretary for the West Sussex wing of the NUT, said: “We’re hoping very much that the head will reflect on what was said during the day to the press about the stressful working conditions many teachers are facing.

“But the overall feeling from staff was one of optimism and certainty. Most definitely feel that they had made the correct choice in the decision to strike.”

He added: “Yes, it caused disruption for some students in the short-term, which is regrettable. However, the long-term positive benefits on the future quality of education, which we feel would improve if our concerns are listened to, far outweigh these.”

Yesterday, the academy’s principal, Steve Jewell had said he was “disappointed” by the action but added that he was willing to listen to the demands of the teachers.

Further protests will take place on Wednesday, April 24, and the following day, during the morning, Mr Thomas said.

Picket lines will again be in operation at the Fitzalan Road entrance to the school.

More action is also in the pipeline but will likely not take place until some point next month.

Parents who would like advice about the strikes should call the academy’s reception, on 01903 711120.
