Littlehampton Town Council opposes traveller site

LITTLEHAMPTON Town Council has opposed plans to turn the site in Ferry Road into permanent traveller pitches.

Residents and businesses strongly opposed the application, which was considered by the council’s planning and transportation committee last Monday.

The final decision on whether to grant planning approval will be made by Arun District Council.

More than 30 people attended the meeting, including the chair of the Rope Walk Resident Group who said: “We strongly object to the proposed change of land use and ask that the committee supports our views.”

The town council confirmed that 17 letters about the application had been received and would be passed to Arun District Council.

The committee opposed the application on the basis the site is in a high risk flood zone and could be contaminated from its previous use.

As part of its emerging local plan, Arun District Council is committed to finding an area for 18 pitches for the gypsy and traveller community before 2017.
