Littlehampton traders go large for big Saturday

SMALL traders in Littlehampton are hoping for a big response from customers on Saturday, December 7, as they join in a national campaign to support independent town centre businesses.

The day has been organised to highlight the importance of smaller shops and their contribution to the economy and wellbeing of town centres.

Simon Vickers, chairman of Littlehampton Traders’ Partnership, said: “In Littlehampton, we do have a vibrant and active town centre. With more out-of-town shopping and internet sales still on the increase, the question is why town centre shopping still continues to attract so many people.

“Nobody can deny the attraction of internet shopping – the choice is massive and you can buy at the press of a button. Yet people still like shopping in town. It’s social – shop, have a coffee, meet your friends, bump into people you know and have a chat. It’s more personal – many shop staff, managers and owners know their customers by their first name.”

Arun District Council is allowing free parking all day in the St Martin’s and Manor House car parks and in another partnership initiative, there will be early evening shopping on the three Thursdays from December 5, with shops open until 7pm, and entertainment and stalls.
