Littlehampton tree planting scheme in fourth year

In 2010, Littlehampton Town Council began a five-year tree planting scheme for the town which would see a total of 250 new trees planted.

The council’s amenity team has successfully completed this year’s planting of 50 trees across 16 streets.

Varieties of trees planted included Rowans, river birches and wild cherries, all selected for their suitability for the town’s climate and for their benefits to the ecosystem.

Assisting the amenity team was a group of local volunteer tree wardens who have taken it upon themselves to regularly monitor the condition of the town’s trees.

Chair of the Town Council’s Community Resources Committee Cllr. Malcolm Belchamber MBE said: “The benefits of new trees in our streets are endless. Not only do they brighten up the Town, they also help keep the air clean and provide food and nesting places for birds.”

The town council is asking people to suggest locations for new trees and is inviting people to adopt a tree.
