Littlehampton’s new market will mix art with the artisans

THE first of a new-style monthly market aiming to offer a different kind of shopping experience comes to Littlehampton today (Saturday, May 2).

The Littlehampton Town Artisan Market sets up its stalls in High Street and will run on the first Saturday of each month from 10am-4pm.

Organisers promise live music, locally sourced or produced goods, performances and exhibitions by artists and that all-important interaction between traders and customers and performers and their audience.

The market is a joint venture between Arun District Council and the Littlehampton Organisation of Contemporary Art (LOCA), whose chairman, Staci Mendoza, said it would be different to a farmers’ market or regular market and would be an alternative to larger centres.

“It is not a case of competing with the out of town shopping complexes – it is a case of offering a shopping experience which cannot be reproduced by big business. Artisan markets offer the old-fashioned custom of direct communication between buyer and creator.”

With high hopes of success, Staci and Littlehampton town centre regeneration officer for Arun, John Edjvet, are already looking to the future, with plans for a special December artisan market tying in with Small Business Saturday.
