Littlehampton’s police station to be relocated

LITTLEHAMPTON’S police station is set to be relocated from its current base with services potentially being moved into council-run buildings or supermarkets.

The station, in East Street, is set to close with assets and officers being relocated across the town and elsewhere in the Arun district.

The plan was announced by Sussex Police on Tuesday (June 25). However, Inspector Nick Bowman, of Arun’s neighbourhood policing team, promised that there would still be a place for local policing in Littlehampton.

He said: “First and foremost the move is all about saving money and identifying which buildings are essential for the force and addressing ways in which we can still play a visible presence in the town.

“So that could mean sharing facilities with other services and partners in the area, as well as looking at other private buildings.”

Insp Bowman did not rule out the possibility of moving a front desk service into local council buildings and potentially into larger shops.

“It is still very early in the process,” he stressed. “But what I can promise is that local policing will remain in Littlehampton.”

The cost-cutting plan was signed off by the county’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Katy Bourne.

It seeks to create ‘community hubs’ and ‘public contact points’ which, would make officers more accessible in the communities they serve.

The move could save the force £50m by 2015.
