Live Wire Scare

RESIDENTS of East Ham Road in Littlehampton, got a nasty shock yesterday (Wednesday) when a lorry containing gardening materials snapped several overhead electric cables.

Sparks flew out of the cables as they fell to the ground after a lorry delivering stone slabs, bricks and cement to Lisa Meredith's house, broke five overhead cables.

Power was lost in a few houses and at least three cars were damaged as a result. The police cordoned off the area and people were told to stay away from the cables as they could still be live.

Laurence Jeffery, who was working on a property at the time, said: "I heard a banging, scrabbling, rumbling sound and when I looked out, there was a large, white vehicle trying to reverse and then these cables were down."

Overhead linesman Roger Reeves from Seeboard arrived on the scene and said his first action would be to make the area safe as the cables were still lying in the road.

"We're not sure whether they are still live and we are not taking any chances," he added.

He estimated it would take two to three hours to restore power to the area.
