Local firms scoop prestigious Queen’s Award for innovation

Two local firms have received a Queen’s Award for Enterprise in recognition of their innovation and design.

Cash Bases Limited, in Newhaven, and Hummingbird Sensing Technology, in Crowborough, have been honoured in the 2016 awards, both in the category of innovation.

For Cash Bases, the award is for its SMARTtill™ Intelligent Cash Drawer, which has been designed to combat the problem of cash loss by automatically counting the contents of the drawer, enabling businesses to track every coin and note in their cash drawer.

Phil Stone, managing director at Cash Bases, said: “A Queen’s Award is the highest honour that can be bestowed on a UK company.

“I am delighted that Cash Bases has received this internationally renowned and highly sought-after award in recognition of its contribution to British enterprise. This award has been achieved through the sustained effort of our staff, who have continued to drive business forward by cultivating cutting-edge solutions for our customers.

“We won our first Queen’s Award in 1995 for Export Achievement and another in 2000 for Enterprise International Trade.

“We will continue to fly the flag for Britain with our commitment to global product innovation and manufacturing excellence.”

Hummingbird Sensing Technology has received the Innovation Award for the design and manufacture of oxygen sensors for medical and industrial applications. The innovation supports legislation prohibiting the use of electrochemical cells in electronic equipment.

The technology used in the company’s oxygen sensors gives them a high accuracy with a longer lifetime and lower lifetime running costs than existing electrochemical technologies. The sensors are used in equipment where oxygen regulation is required, including in anaesthesia, critical care monitoring and infant incubation. Hummingbird was founded in 2006 and this is its first Queen’s Award.

The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise are made each year by The Queen, on the advice of the Prime Minister.

The companies will attend a reception at Buckingham Palace and will be presented with a crystal bowl to mark the achievement.
