Local lads win college awards

Two former St Richard's students won awards at the annual Sussex Downs College Awards Evening.

The event took place at the Grand Hotel in Eastbourne.

Hamish Hiscock, 17, picked up the Lewes 6th Form Award, sponsored by the Grand Hotel, with Edward Farragher, 20, being awarded the Eastbourne Vocational College Award, sponsored by OyezStraker.

Both are exceptional students who showed commitment to their studies.

Despite living in Ninfield, Hamish had an excellent attendance rate '“ even making it into college when it snowed last year. His subjects include chemistry, double maths, physics and music plus the pre professional music diploma.

Edward, who completed a BTEC in Manufacturing Engineering in July, is currently studying maths at Southampton University. During his time at Sussex Downs College, Edward threw himself into college life by playing on the football team and had a willingness to help others.

Now in its fifth year, this was an opportunity to praise and congratulate exceptional achievement and commitment to the college over the past 12 months from both students and staff.

The award winners came from all areas of the college and were representative of the huge range of work Sussex Downs College undertakes with almost 6,000 14-19 year-old students, 10,000 adult learners and 1,700 employers. With an annual turnover of 41 million and 1400 staff Sussex Downs College is one of the major businesses in the county.
