Local students shine in anational trade competition

A group of construction students from Sussex Coast College Hastings travelled to Kent to take part in the UK's largest and longest running multi-trade competition for construction trainees and apprentices.

Jack Mouat-Harrison, Jack Loynes, Sam Earey and Ryan Carr made the trip to East Kent College to represent the Hastings College.

Jack Mouat-Harrison beat a strong field of painters and decorators to win gold in the Painting and Decorating category.

Jack Loynes claimed second spot in the Joinery category, while Sam Earey and Ryan Carre narrowly missed out on top three finishes, in the Bricklaying and Carpentry categories.

Kristian Bartlett, Construction Lecturer at Sussex Coast College Hastings said: “A huge well done and congratulations to the four students who went to compete at the SkillBuild regional heat.”

“To have a first and second place is amazing, and although Sam and Ryan didn’t place in the top three, they did a great job of representing the college against some tough opposition.”

SkillBuild is delivered by CITB (Construction Industry Training Board) and is the UK’s biggest and longest running skills competition for construction trainees and apprentices.

students competed in five categories covering: Bricklaying, Carpentry, Joinery, Painting and Decorating, and Plastering. The highest scoring winners from the regional events are invited to compete in the national final which will be held at the skills show on 17-19 November 2016.
