Lock is put out of action for months

A MAJOR investigation into what caused massive damage to a lock gate has been launched by Shoreham Port.

The Prince George Lock suffered major structural failure on Friday, January 25 and will be out of action for up to six months.

Port officials are unsure what caused the damage to the 28-tonne gate, which provides access from the canal to the sea for leisure craft and fishing vessels.

Rod Johnstone, the port's chief executive, said: "All we know at the moment is that at 9.30pm our port controller heard a very loud bang and that the western gate on the Prince George Lock was letting water out of the lock.
