Members of Horse Hill Protection Group (HHPG) told the Crawley Observer they are there to monitor safety issues - they say Government cuts have left the Environment Agency inadequately equipped for the task.

Isabelle Bish, at the scene, said early this afternoon that a member of the group had held up a lorry on its way to the site by attaching himself to it.

He was later arrested by police.

Company Horse Hill Developments Limited (HHDL) has been drilling at the site since September 2014.

Last year, UK Oil and Gas Investments (UKOG) announced there could be up to 100bn barrels of oil beneath the site.

UKOG has said it does not expect to have to use hydraulic fracturing or ‘fracking’ to release the oil from Horse Hill-1, nicknamed the Gatwick Gusher.

Anti-fracking campaign groups fear that large deposits of shale gas could be found, creating a huge incentive for fracking to take place.
