London trip to say thank you to five

Five young people from the Bognor Regis area have been thanked for helping others.

They enjoyed a day in London as the prize for winning this year's Bognor Hotham Rotary Club's Penny Awards.

They toured the Houses of Parliament and met with the town's MP, Nick Gibb, who presented them with their award certificates on the House of Commons terrace.

The awards are presented by the Rotarians to young people of the town who have shown particular dedication in helping the community. They are linked to the annual youth awards held by the Arun Youth Council.

Bognor Hotham Rotary Club president Gavin Oclee-Brown said he was impressed by the amount of community work carried out voluntarily by the young people.

'There are many young people who give of their time to the community and, through the Penny Awards, the club is able to express in a small way our thanks for their efforts,' he stated.

The winners are:

Alistair Clarke '“ a volunteer at Bognor Regis Youth Wing over two years and for his work as a fireguard and helping to develop peoples' swimming ability and water skills.

David Hall '“ a volunteer trainee youth support worker at the 39 Club. Particularly works with younger members of the club and described as having a positive effect on their lives.

Matt Hoff '“ an Arun youth councillor since February 2004. Has taken a key role in junior citizenship debates and helped to set up advisory groups for 8-13 year olds. Has also taken part in Shopmobility project.

Jake Shoebridge '“ volunteers as a Beaver, Cub and Explorer youth leader where he devises a varied programme to help their development. Has also been commended for his work at district and county camps.

Scott Slater '“ involved in bullying support group M8 as well as Smart Art and Mosaic workshops. On the committee of the Youth Opportunity Fund and has also helped with children's holiday schemes at The Arena sports centre and Bognor Regis Library.
