London vicar set to become new archdeacon of Hastings

A vicar from London will be the new archdeacon of Hastings, it was announced today (Friday, May 27).

Rev Edward Dowler will take over the role after an official ceremony at Chichester Cathedral in September.

The role was vacant after Philip Jones returned to parish ministry earlier this year.

The father-of-two joins the diocese from Clay Hill churches St John and St Luke in London and said he is looking forward to it.

“I am delighted to be coming to the Diocese of Chichester and I greatly look forward to supporting the life and ministry of the Church in east Sussex, and doing all that I can to further the work of the gospel,” he said.

Edward will be installed as Archdeacon of Hastings on Sunday 25 September at 3.30pm in Chichester Cathedral.

Edward studied English at Oxford University before training for ordination at Westcott House, Cambridge University, and was ordained in 1994 in the Diocese of London.

“In appointing Edward to this challenging post we have someone who is committed to encouraging others to know, love and to follow Jesus Christ in the communities we are called to serve,” bishop of Chichester Martin Warner said.

“We look forward to welcoming Edward, Anna and their children to Sussex in the autumn.”

Edward is married to Anna Tims, a journalist for the Guardian, and have two children: Eleanor (13) and Gregory (11).

The new archdeacon enjoys reading, cooking and learning to play the piano.

He is a regular contributor of articles and book reviews to the Church Times and he also reviews books for the journal Political Theology, as well as writing four books.

Edward succeeds Mr Jones who is now archdeacon emeritus and Diocesan Advisory Committee for the Care of Churches chairman.
