Long waste wait

Rye residents currently face a long round trip to Mountfield or Bexhill in order to dispose of large items.

Rye County Councillor Keith Glazier has confirmed that the county council does not have sufficient funding to provide a bring-to facility in the Rye area.

Cllr Glazier believes that the new joint waste collection contract, involving four local councils, including Rother, should provide a greater range of kerb-side collections.

Cllr Mary Smith, chair of Rye Town Council’s public services committee, said: “I have explored this and to pay to have a double mattress taken away would involve a minimum cost of £100.

“There is a site at New Romney, just across the border in Kent, where Shepway Council residents can bring anything free of charge. We badly need something like this in Rye.”

Rye supermarket Jempsons have also given notice that recycling bins will have to be moved from the car park of it’s Crownfields store site by the end of November due to ongoing store expansion plans.

Rother is seeking alternative sites.
