LOOKING BACK: Discover Eastbourne's rich history

The group, a charitable, not-for-profit organisation which encourages interest in the study of the history of Eastbourne through talks, conducted walks and publications, currently has around 300 members but is looking to increase its numbers.

Mick Hymans from the society said, “We are a registered charity that is interested in all aspects of the history of our town and surrounding area.

“Membership is only £10 per annum or £14 for couples. We have a quarterly magazine that is sent to all our members that contains interesting articles about the town. We also publish queries from members of the public together with any answers that our research team have been able to give.

“There is also a number of talks and film shows throughout the year. Our first talk of this new year is at All Souls Church Hall, Susans Road (entrance to the hall is round the corner in Wellesley Road) on January 26 at 2pm which is entitled Down The Line From Polegate to Eastbourne.

“Non members are welcome to come to the talk for a £2 entrance fee. Teas and coffees will be available.”

Some twelve meetings are held each year usually at St Saviour’s and St Peter’s Church Hall, South Street, and each meeting is addressed by a speaker with local historical knowledge.

A journal, the Eastbourne Local Historian, is published quarterly to provide a vehicle in which members’ research findings are published.

It also provides a programme of forthcoming meetings and activities, news, notes, and enquiries.

The society is administrated by voluntary officers and committee members, whose positions are subject to annual election.
