Lord Carey to lead Bognor bible week

A former Archbishop of Canterbury will lead this year's Bognor Regis Bible Week.

Lord Carey of Clifton will take part in the entire event which has a new home at the Regis Centre.

He will be hosting morning Bible teaching sessions between September 20-24 as well as leading a communion service on the final day.

He will also fill the Wednesday evening speaking spot.

Lord Carey led the world's 70m Anglicans between 1991 and 2002 and will be the most prestigious guest since the Bible Week began in 2008.

Organisers at the Christ for the Nations UK charity are delighted with their coup.

One of the volunteers, Judith Lee, said: "Those of us organising the week are hopeful this high-profile choice of speaker and the new venue will prove to be popular.

"We believe the Regis Centre is likely to be a much better venue than the usual marquee as participants can choose their own comfortable theatre seat and it will be warmer there in the early autumn evenings."

Regis Centre joint manager Kate Bennett said: "We are pleased to welcome the Bible Week for the first time.

"It is an event which puts us at the heart of the community, which is where we should be.

"Having Bible Week here will bring people to the building who might not otherwise come and will also make use of the facilities during the daytime.

"The week should work well here. We have the Alexandra Theatre for the more formal activities as well as the foyer and the meeting rooms for exhibitions."

The first two Bible Weeks were held at the Royal Norfolk Hotel and attracted several thousand people.

The change of venue has arisen because the hotel has been sold by Christ for the Nations, but the switch still keeps the town's biggest religious event in a prominent location on the seafront.

Bible Week 2010 will begin at 6.30pm on September 19 with an exhibition in the theatre foyer and studio.

This will be followed at 7.30pm by an outreach evening led with worship led by Rob Newey and well-known evangelist Ishmael.

The following days will follow the pattern of morning prayer at 9.30am with worship and Lord Carey's Bible study relating to the main theme, Seek Ye First the Kingdom of God... (Matthew 6:33) until midday.

The early afternoon and early evening will see the focus on an exhibition in the centre's foyer.

Worship at 7.30pm will be followed by a speaker such as last year's Bible study speaker, Raymond Pfister, and Greg Haslam, a popular speaker in 2008.

Fringe events include an exhibition of dramatic prophetic paintings by Chichester artist, Helen Hiles, at the Regis Centre and Lord Carey's talk on the Life of an Archbishop at St Wilfrid's Church at 2.30pm on September 21 as part of the church's centenary.
