The vehicle is reported to be ‘well alight’ after five of the portable gas cylinders it was carrying exploded and the area has been cordoned off as a precaution with fire crews expecting the final two cylinders to go off. No one is believed to have been injured.

Crews from Burgess Hill and Haywards Heath are currently attending the blaze and the road has been closed with emergency services encouraging drivers to avoid the area.

A spokesperson for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said the road was likely to be shut for a while due to the damage caused to the surface.

They added the incident was around half a mile away from the A23 so those using the road should not be affected.
