Lotto winner: News scrum surrounds Matthew

Journalists jostled for position as Matthew entered the room and he seemed to take all the questions fired at him in his stride.

He told the gathered press pack, which included Observer reporter Laura Button and photographer Justin Lycett, he had initially planned to keep his win quiet.

Matthew said: “We tried to keep it secret, but it got out, so hopefully this will make it easier for me.”

After fielding questions from reporters, Matthew posed for several rounds of photographs before conducting a series of television interviews and finally speaking to newspaper journalists.

An exhausted Matthew told the Observer he had found the intense press attention ‘tiring and stressful’.
