Made in Bexhill: race bike to beat the pack

A BEXHILL company who build racing bikes have opened the throttle for their latest effort.

The bike shown was a standard Yamaha One road bike before Terry Kirk, 61, the proprietor of PDM Racing in Beeching Park Industrial Estate, went to work on it.

On Thursday the custom-built machine was shipped out to Dubai for a race series which takes place in October. Terry will fly out to set the bike up in the weeks before the race. He will take into account the exact needs of the rider, his race style, and the track.

To turn the bike into a world-beater, Terry first stripped all the road going body work and lights, replacing them with race body work.

The suspension is taken apart and repacked in the front and rear, and the engine removed. The parts are dismantled and tuned, and improvements such as quickshifts, which let the driver change gear without closing the throttle or using the clutch, are added.

Smooth, racing slick tyres are put on.

Terry estimates he spent two weeks of man-hours to build the machine, which has cost the owner around 25,000.

He said: "It's a slightly better spec than we would normally build, but we do build a wide spectrum of race bikes. It's a bit special."
