Made in Britain review

THOSE wishing to see the return of musical legends Billy Fury, Cliff Richard, Paul McCartney and John Lennon had their dreams half fulfilled by tribute show Made in Britain.

Michael King and Steve Halliday gave dynamic performances as Fury and Richard respectively, but Dave Peterson (McCartney) and Paul Moroney (Lennon) are no longer in the show.

So King and Halliday entertained a small but enthusiastic audience at the massive Congress Theatre for two hours with backing band The Crown Jewels.

King told me afterwards: "It was no problem when the other two dropped out '“ we simply appear twice as long and really enjoy it."

But it was a lot to ask of both them and the audience in such a big venue and they should generate more atmosphere when they return to Eastbourne at the Winter Garden Theatre on August 7.

Even so, the energy they generated prompted half a dozen females to leave their stalls seats and dance in the aisles.

King's powerful voice was well suited to Half Way To Paradise, Fools Errand and Last Night Was Made For Love. But he ought to get himself a better wig!

Halliday, who looks more like Elvis than Cliff, was at his best belting out Living Doll, The Young Ones and Congratulations.

He explained to me: "I do an affectionate tribute to Cliff rather than an impersonation."

Ironically, both singers can also perform Elvis tributes, but sadly decided against giving us an Elvis impersonation when singing his Blue Suede Shoes hit.
