Maggi’s jig for Green Man

BEXHILL morris dancer Maggi Davis had the honour of dancing the opening jig at the Jack In The Green Festival in Hastings.

The event started with a service at St Clements and All Saints Church in Old Town on Sunday morning.

This was accompanied by the sound of bells, squeeze boxes and dancing feet of various morris groups assembled.

Each year just one local dancer is selected to dance the traditional solo at the front of the nave and this year Hannah’s Cat squire Maggi, of Fairlight Close, performed the intricate Nutting Girl jig to the packed church.

Jack In The Green ended, as always, in Hastings Castle following a parade through the town amid thousands of visiting motorbikers.

Jack, a leaf covered giant, is slaughtered by morris dancers to release the summer spirits.

Maggi’s partner Dave Masters said: “It was a brilliant way to welcome the new summer season to our part of the south coast.”
