Main road shut for nine hours after crash

Sussex Police say the DAF tipper truck and a Ford Transit van were travelling in opposite directions on the A272 between Petworth and Wisborough Green around 2.50pm yesterday.

The injured driver, a 36-year-old man from Shoreham-by-Sea, was flown to St George’s Hospital, Tooting, London by the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance where he is currently being treated for serious injuries.

The lorry driver, a 60-year-old man from Midhurst, was unhurt. He was later arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and has been bailed until 18 April while enquiries continue.

The A272 was closed between its junctions with Kingspit Lane and Crimbourne Lane for nine hours while emergency services were at the scene.

Sergeant Neil Cox, of the Arundel road policing unit, said: “Police would like to hear from anyone who may have seen what happened. They should email [email protected] or phone 101, quoting serial 846 of 18/02.”

He added: “I’d also like to thank motorists whose journeys were delayed or disrupted by the road closure for their patience and understanding.”
