Major search after missing man's rucksack found at Seaford Head

The search for missing 65-year-old Timothy Gotch was launched after members of the public reported finding a rucksack and coat near the cliff edge on Saturday (January 23).

Police began searching the area nearby and called for assistance from the coastguard and the RNLI.

Despite an extensive search no sign of the missing man was found and the search was called off by 6pm on Saturday.

A police spokesman said, “The search for missing Bramber man, Timothy Gotch, 65, focused on Seaford Head on Saturday, January 23, when it was reported that a coat, body warmer and rucksack had been found on the edge of cliffs above Splash Point.

“A short time later, a car, believed to be that belonging to the missing man, was found on the seafront at Seaford.

“He remained missing at 1.30pm on Monday.”

Coastguard teams from Newhaven, Birling Gap and Eastbourne joined in the search alongside Newhaven RNLI and a police helicopter crew.

Two senior coastguard officers also took part in the search.

Police ask anyone who has seen Timothy or has any information about his whereabouts to email [email protected] or call 101 quoting serial 1323 of 22/ 01.
