Making contact with Bognor's young people

More young people are being seen by youth workers on the streets of Bognor Regis.

The increase in numbers has been noted by the three members of the Konnect team who work outdoors.

Project manager Jason O'Hagan told Konnect's annual meeting: "There has been an increase in the number of young people being observed, which should translate in time to contact."

The numbers observed by the young workers rose by seven per cent to 133 in the year to the end of March compared with the previous year. Those acknowledged and those spoken to stayed consistent at 214 and 356.

There was a marked shift in the content of the chats.

"There was a significant increase in the number of conversations around the leisure category," said Mr O'Hagan, "with nearly 30 per cent of contacts wanting to chat about hobbies, recreational pursuits and what resources were available to them."

Other main subjects were jobs, housing and education.

Intervention also needed to be carried out regarding a further three young people.

The total of 706 contacts was broadly the same as the 711 in the previous year.

Nearly three out of four of those contacted were in the 13 to 15-year-old age range in keeping with previous years.
