This week is Children’s Hospice Week, and the theme this year is making every moment count.
Children’s Hospice Week is a national awareness week run by Together for Short Lives, a national charity that works to ensure that every child and young person unlikely to reach adulthood, and their family, get the best possible care and support whenever and wherever they need it. They support all 53 children’s hospices in the UK, including Chestnut Tree.
There are a range of activities going on throughout the week, all around the theme of ‘momentous moments.’ At the house our activity leaders have been busy planning things to do with the children and families who are visiting during the week, and out in the community we are encouraging people to share their own momentous moments using #momentscount.
On Thursday of this week our Uckfield shop will be celebrating its first birthday, with a party for staff and customers. Opened last year by the Mayor of Uckfield, the shop has already raised over £63,500 towards the care of local children with life-shortening conditions, so a massive congratulations to all the hardworking volunteers and staff there.
We are also inviting schools, groups and businesses to join in with Children’s Hospice Week and host a dress-down day to help raise money and awareness. Anyone taking part can choose between a ‘mellow yellow’ Chestnut theme, or the Together for Short Lives ‘Momentous Moments’ theme (dress up as an iconic person - a historical figure, a music idol or sporting star, or even a character from a favourite soap or TV show – anything that represents a momentous moment in time). You can get in touch with our fundraising team on 01323 725095 if you would like to find out more about this.
And, of course, we round up the week next Saturday with our Night to Remember midnight walk. We have nearly 700 ladies signed up to walk four or ten miles and raise vital funds that will allow us to continue offering our care to children with life-shortening conditions in East Sussex, and their families. We are really looking forward to the night, and hope to have plenty of photos to share with you next week
