SOUTH MALLING SCHOOL: 2017 has started with lots of exciting events at South Malling school as they begin their learning journey that focuses on enterprise, the world of work, maths and design technology and ends with an enterprise fair where the children will sell the products they have made to their parents/family. Alongside the enterprise theme the school will be working on the value of perseverance and learning how important it is not to give up when something is tricky. To help them understand about the world of work the school are inviting parents, friends and local community members to come and tell them about their jobs and explain to the children what they needed to do to get their jobs. On Friday the school is having a BE assembly where the children will be dressing up as what they want to be when they are grown up. The NSPCC is also visiting the school this week and they are taking part in a fundraising activity that will help the children have the knowledge and understanding they need to stay safe.

SOUTH MALLING CHURCH: Are meeting this week to plan a range of social activities for the coming year. They will also be making arrangements to open the church a number of times during the next few weeks to enable local people to see the Let there be more Light installation, especially the parents of children who were involved in its making. Despite the secret fears of some church members, the art work is impressive and fits well into building. It consists of hangings depicting the miracle of the loaves and fishes, where Jesus found himself challenged to provide food for the five thousand or so who had followed him into the desert to hear his teaching. A young lad offered his lunch of loaves and fish for a start and somehow Jesus managed to turn that into a fulfilling meal for the whole crowd. When local man, Bobby Morley, was offered a box of my little ponies, found during a refurbishment close to where he works, he accepted it, to save the waste and found that more and more of these boxes kept being found and he ended up with a few thousand. After an unrelated hint about the bible story from a friend in Rwanda, and putting together this experience with the ponies, with added (though unintentional) inspiration from Grayson Perry and the hard work and creativity of children from South Malling School, the Pells, and the church Sunday School, the end product is quite amazing. Almost a miracle in its own right. Watch out for a list of Viewing Days for parents, children and interested others. The church is always open for regular services of course, for anyone happy to worship there. This Sunday, the service of Holy Communion is led by the Vicar, Revd Steve Daughtery. The service begins as always on Sunday mornings, at 9.30am. The church is one of the three Trinity churches in Lewes.
