SOUTH MALLING CHURCH: This Sunday there will be a service of morning praise, with the band. The associate Vicar, Revd Jeremy Bamber will be leading. The service begins at 9.30am and all are welcome. The church has asked me to give early notice of its Open Day, on Saturday September 10, when the church will be open for all those involved in Ride and Stride, but will also welcome people who would just like to see inside the church, which is normally kept locked except when services and other events are taking place. During the afternoon Chris Burt will be talking about the impressive nature conservancy project in the churchyard, with slides of some of the wildlife, including impressive night time and early morning visitors out of hours who are rarely seen. The first stage of the installation project based on children's work will also be on display and the project will be formally opened. There will also be a Hog Roast, a Drumming Workshop and children's activities. More of this later on but please make a note of the date.

ARTWAVE IN MALLING: Opened last weekend in three different locations and three contrasting styles. At 18 the Nurseries, Peter Kettle is showing a striking collection of his paintings and prints, with local scenes and iconic, neo-gothic images, which have the brooding quality of the early to mid-Victorian period. Peter Kettle, who exhibits at the Royal Academy, is a friendly and helpful source of information about his work. In the Old Brewery at the end of Thomas Street, Liza Mackintosh’s exhibition, Glimpses of Landscapes, is abstract, meticulous work in a range of materials including bark, grass and seeds combined with stitch craft. The generous white space of the gallery is ideal for showing Liza’s work giving an effect which is quite breath-taking. The third exhibition offers a complete contrast again, in Bifrost Cottage, across Malling Street from the other two venues, Melissa Hodges shows a small range of life drawings, mostly charcoal and chalk. There is also a range of craftwork on sale by Anna Grace. The venue provides an opportunity for some excellent cake and a drink. These venues will all be open over the Bank Holiday (Bifrost Cottage only on Sunday). Don’t forget that the Dairy Studio at Old Malling Farm, will also be open this coming weekend. This is always worth visiting and you get to see a part of Malling which is off the beaten track. If you have a spare afternoon, this is an excellent way to spend it. Peter Kettle is open from 2pm to 5pm. The others from 10am to 4pm at least, though the Dairy Studio opens at 11am.
