Malling

SOUTH MALLING SCHOOL: Term 5 has got off to a good start with a visit from their linked French school. This year the school from Ittelville brought 60 pupils to join the Year 4 and 5 classes for a day and a half. Miss O'Neil organised an adventurous package of activities including a walk on Malling Down with Sussex Wildlife. The children were able to try out their increasingly good French skills and find out a bit more about their French pen friends, all at the same time as participating in exciting music, geography and sports activities. Next week, Year 4 and 5 classes are going to be performing their Bookworms Bonanza. They have been studying the authors, Roald Dahl and CS Lewis and have created an exciting performance of song, dance, music and spoken word for parents and friends. As the weather hopefully improves, a lot of the PE sessions will move outside and the school will start to prepare both for their own Sports Day and the District Sports event that will take place towards the end of term 6. There will also be an opportunity for some of the Year 4 children to compete in a tennis festival at the Southdown Club while, very exciting, they will also have a representative at a National Final for the first time. Having won the county under-11 girls' competition, Yasmin in year 6 will be representing not just South Malling but the whole of East Sussex at the English Schools Table Tennis Association's national finals. Good luck Yasmin.

SOUTH MALLING CHURCH: (One of the Trinity Churches). Last Sunday’s Family Service ended with children who had spent their Sunday school time outside, looking for signs of spring, telling the rest of the congregation what they had seen, lots of different spring flowers, daffodils, primroses, snowdrops with slow worms, grass snakes, butterflies and lots of insects. They had been outside with David Melville from Southover, their sister church, and Chris Burt who leads the volunteers who work with Sussex Wildlife, ensuring that South Malling is a model of good green churchyard management. It was an opportunity for the congregation to thank Chris, in particular, for his excellent work with a hearty and well-deserved round of applause. This week Revd Steve Daughtery, the Vicar of the three Trinity Churches, will be speaking about Green issues and leading Holy Communion. The service starts at 9.30am and all are welcome.
