Malling

SOUTH MALLING SCHOOL: The first South Malling Marathon was completed last Friday during Sports Relief. The whole school enjoyed their individual runs, which added together made up the 26 miles that was run around the field. The Year 3 class (Blue Birds) put on a great performance of the Iron Man for their family and friends on Wednesday. Having studied the book by Ted Hughes this term, they used dance, music and narration to tell the gripping story. On Thursday (yesterday) the school visited South Malling church for their Easter services. Songs, prayers and readings were contributed by each class and Revd Jeremy Bamber and Neil Chisnall helped the children to understand the meaning of Easter. The Friends of South Malling held their Easter Cake competition on the last day of term. There were many delicious and artistic creations but we will have to wait until next term to find out who the winners are. The school would like to wish everybody a happy Easter and hopes the holiday is a refreshing and enjoyable one. They return for Term 5 on Monday April 11.

SOUTH MALLING CHURCH: (One of the Trinity Group) enjoyed a happy Palm Sunday Communion last Sunday with a good sized congregation. The service included the distribution of Palm crosses. Yesterday (Maundy Thursday) there was a powerful Communion Service in the evening, finishing with the ancient Tenebrae act, where the altar is stripped bare and the congregation re-lives the prayers, arrest and arraignment of Jesus through seven gospel readings, as a group of seven candles is extinguished one by one, leaving the church in complete darkness and silence. People then leave slowly in their own time and in silence. Today (Good Friday) there is an Iona-style meditation at 10am. Lasting for an hour and focussed on how Christians should live in a world which God has redeemed by accepting and undergoing such suffering from those he has created and loves. Tomorrow, (Saturday) there is a Craft Morning for children, from 9.30am to 11.30am. These events are always well-done and very popular. An additional attraction here will be the first of South Malling’s Easter Egg hunts. Finally on Sunday, there will be a service of Morning Praise, celebrating Christ’s resurrection with traditional hymns, new songs and another Easter Egg Hunt, this time for the Sunday School. All are welcome. The service begins at 9.30am.

SM TENANTS AND RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION: Met on March 7 and discussed: a street party to celebrate the Queen’s 90th Birthday, with thoughts that this might take place on Fitzgerald Green; various problems with buses, a NO Cold Calling Zone, a meeting about the Police HQ on March17 and details about a Summer Playscheme following last year’s successful venture for children. The association and the Foodbank are now in surplus. A 20 mph speed limit for Malling has now been agreed. Signage will soon be going up about this. Further details on these points in the next few weeks. Happy Easter everyone.
