Man airlifted to hospital following recycling site accident

A MAN was airlifted to hospital in London following an accident at the Mountfield Household Waste Recycling Site last Friday (Septmeber 9).

The member of the public is believed to have fallen over whilst carrying a bag of soil, causing him to hit his head.

South East Coast Ambulance Service was called to the scene at around 11.15am, and the Sussex Air Ambulance landed at the site at 11.40am.

The man, who is in his 40s and from Crowhurst, was conscious and flown to Kings College Hospital in London for specialist assessment.

No one else was involved and police say the incident is not being treated as an industrial accident.

The site is run by Veolia Environmental Services.

A spokesperson for Veolia said: “At approximately 11.20am on Friday September 9, a gentleman fell near the soil container at the Mountfield Household Waste Recycling Site.

“Site staff went to his assistance and called the emergency services who responded within 10 minutes and called for an air ambulance due to the nature of the injury.

“We now understand that the gentleman is out of hospital and recovering well.

“We are committed to the safe operation of the Household Waste Recycling Sites.

“This site like all others has comprehensive health and safety procedures in place and has trained staff available to assist and advise the public at all times.

“A full investigation is being carried out into this incident.”
