At 11.38pm on Tuesday (May 24) police were called to Vale Road, Seaford, after a report that a dog being walked on a lead had been attacked by another dog which was not on a lead.

A two-year-old black Labrador, which was being walked on a lead by its owner, a 19-year-old Seaford woman, had been attacked by the other dog which had then run off.

Several people had tried to help, and one drove his car at the attacking dog to try to separate the pair.

Tragically the Labrador died at the scene.

The other dog was found nearby soon afterwards, and police dog handlers describe it as a Bull Mastiff/Rottweiler cross. Its owner, who was not present at the time of the incident, later gave written authority for it to be humanely put down by a vet.

A 27-year-old local man was arrested on suspicion of allowing the dog to be dangerously out of control and causing injury. He was on Wednesday (May 25) in custody for interview and further enquiries.

The owner of the Labrador was treated at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton for bite injuries to her hand and forearm.
