The 46-year-old man was arrested after police were called to an address in South Terrace, where a fire had started in a top-floor flat, shortly before 11pm on Tuesday, March 25.

The flat’s two occupants were safely evacuated from the four-storey building while firefighters controlled the blaze.

Around 10 residents in South Terrace had to stay the night in the Littlehampton Swimming and Sports Centre after their ground floor flats were flooded when a water pipe melted.

It took firefighters half an hour to control the ‘intense’ fire, and a further three hours to make sure it had been put out.

Dean Puttock, crew commander at Littlehampton fire station, said: “We turned up to smoke covering the whole road, coming out of a third floor flat.

“We had to have the BA (firefighters wearing breathing apparatuses) going in there to put out the fire, but thankfully no-one was in there.”

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to phone Sussex Police on 101 or email [email protected], quoting serial 1533 of 25/3.
