Man arrested on suspicion of robbery after ‘nasty’ Rustington attack

POLICE have arrested a man on suspicion of robbery after a couple in Rustington were attacked at knife point, on Thursday (April 4).

The victims were walking home along a footpath that links Ash Lane to Station Road, at around 8.45pm when the assault took place.

They were both approached by a man who attacked the male and then threatened the woman at knife point.

An attempt was made to grab her handbag but nothing was stolen and the victims ran away.

The assaulted male suffered a cut to his head and went to Worthing Hospital for treatment.

A 23-year-old Rustington man was arrested near to the scene of the incident on suspicion of robbery and has been interviewed and released on bail until May 4.

Officers have conducted a search of the area and completed house to house and CCTV enquiries.

Police are appealing for anybody with information about this incident, which is being dealt with as robbery and assault.

The suspect is described as a white man, of slim build, 5ft 7in to 6ft with short dark hair wearing a dark jacket with his hood up. He was carrying a dark coloured draw string bag.

Detective sergeant Colin O’Hare said: “This was a nasty incident. Police are keeping an open mind who the suspect is. While a man has been arrested, investigations will continue.

“There may be another suspect we need to identify and I urge anybody with information to contact Sussex Police on 101 quoting serial 1414 of 4/4.”
