Man banned from roads for drink-driving

Police said Mark Miall, an actuary, of Beckworth Lane in Lindfield, was arrested in Butlers Green Road, Haywards Heath, on December 4.

The 53-year-old was charged with driving with 66mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath in his system, the legal limit is 35.

He pleaded guilty at Crawley Magistrates’ Court on Monday (December 21) and was disqualified from driving for 18 months.

He was also ordered to pay a £380 fine, a £150 criminal courts charge, £85 Crown Prosecution Service costs and a £38 victim surcharge.

A total of 137 arrests have been made since Sussex and Surrey Police launched their joint Christmas campaign to crack down on drink and drug-driving, named Operation Dragonfly, on December 1.

Police said Damian Daley, of Cromwell Mews, Burgess Hill, was arrested on the M25 near Leatherhead on December 14.

The 36-year-old was charged with drink-driving and has been released on bail to appear at Redhill Magistrates’ Court on January 8.

Brennan Cura, of Leylands Road, Burgess Hill, was stopped in Weybridge.

The 51-year-old was charged with drink driving and failing to stop for police and has been released on bail to appear at Guildford Magistrates’ Court on January 6.

Aleksiev Zhivkov, a car valeter, of Knole Grove in East Grinstead, was arrested in Sussex Road, Haywards Heath, on Sunday (December 20).

The 35-year-old was charged with driving with 54mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath in his system, driving with no licence and driving with no insurance.

He is due to appear at Crawley Magistrates’ Court on January 14.

Chief Inspector Andy Gooch said: “With Christmas just around the corner, we will be continuing to target motorists who think it is ok to drive while under the influence of drink or drugs. While we encourage people to enjoy the festivities, it is important that they do so without putting their own lives - and others’ - in jeopardy.

“Such actions can lead to devastating consequences, and we are committed to ensuring the roads in Sussex are safe during the festive period and throughout the year.

“The message, as always, is clear - drink or drive; never both.”
