Man charged with £1.5k diesel theft

A Kent man has been charged with a string of offences, including thefts of diesel from vehicles in Ninfield, Northiam and Broad Oak, worth a combined total of more than £1,500.

William Hayton, 47, of Erskine Park Road, Tunbridge Wells, has been charged with two robberies, two attempted robberies, and four thefts of diesel from vehicles, all in the East Sussex and Kent areas over the past three years.

He will appear on bail at Eastbourne Magistrates Court on Wednesday, September 29.

The two robberies were at the One Stop Shop in Bexhill on April 7, 2007, when 550 cash was taken and at the Hawkhurst Fish Farm in Kent on April 8, 2007, when 435 cash was taken.

The two attempted robberies were at the Horam Service Station on April 14, 2007, and at the village Post Office in Speldhurst, Kent, on April 27, 2007.

The four diesel thefts were all from parked transport vehicles in East Sussex.

The first in Ninfield in February 2008 when 900 worth of fuel was taken, the second in Broad Oak in the same month when diesel and a power tool valued together at 410 were taken, the third in Flimwell on November 28 2008 when 700 of diesel was taken, and the fourth in Northiam on October 28 2009, when 300 of diesel was taken.

The charges result from an enquiry by detectives from Hailsham, working with Kent Police.
