“Officers are currently working to establish the identity of the person, and inform their next of kin,” the spokesman said.

“A file will be prepared for the coroner.”

The train involved was the 10pm Horsham to London Victoria service.

The line was reopened at about 11.55pm.

The incident led to severe disruption with all lines blocked between Horsham and Three Bridges.

A Southern spokesman said services were being diverted and replacement bus services were being put on.
