Man dies in Sussex cliff car plunge

A man whose car plunged over a Sussex clifftop last night (Monday) died in the incident.

Emergency services were called to Beachy Head near Eastbourne to a report of a car having gone over the cliffs by the Belle Tout Lighthouse at around 5.45pm.

The vehicle was found to have landed on the beach area.

Police said the driver, believed to be a 30-year-old man, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

His death is not being treated as suspicious and the coroner has been informed.

Fire crews, police, paramedics and coastguards were involved in a major rescue on the clifftop in strong winds.

The road was also closed between Birling Gap and Belle Tout.
