Man fundraising for hospice through festive season

Wilf Brooks, 72, of Offington Avenue, has decorated his house with bright Christmas lights in a bid to raise money for the hospice.

Wilf has been decorating his house with bright lights for the last few years and decided this year that he would do it for a worthy cause.

The lights were officially turned on by his seven-year-old granddaughter last week and the collection is now underway.

A box has been placed outside Wilf’s house where passers-by are encouraged to donate.

Wilf said: “I have been decorating my house with big and bright decorations for a number of years now and this year I decided I wanted to do something for charity.

“My wife and I have been saying we wanted to raise money but we couldn’t think how.
“This way I could combine my love for Christmas with a good cause.”

Wilf thinks he has raised about £100 so far and hopes the donations will keep coming in.

“Loads of people slow down as they drive past the house and look at the lights” he added.

“We want people to stop and donate. Just a few pounds here and there would be great.”

Wilf has been collecting Christmas decorations from car boot sales and auctions from as far back as 1900.

One day, Wilf would like to open up one of the bedrooms in his house as a museum for decorations.
“In the future, I could show off my decorations from pre first World War and charge just a couple of pounds to see it.
“This would be another great way to fundraise.”
