A spokesperson for the Shoreham RNLI said several crews from across Sussex joined the hunt on Thursday for the man, who fell overboard 30 miles off the Eastbourne coast.

The commercial fisherman was reported to have fallen overboard from his vessel while attempting to free an obstruction from the boat’s propellers in French waters.

The Shoreham RNLI’s all weather lifeboat was launched at 12.50pm on Thursday to join the all weather lifeboats from Eastbourne and Newhaven to join the mission.

The coastguard rescue helicopters from Lydd and Gosport also joined the lifeboats in the 10-hour search, but the man was not found.

The search was called off on Thursday night and the lifeboats returned to station.
