Man in wheelchair appears in court charged with burglary

A MAN accused of burgling a Worthing flat before jumping from a first floor window has appeared in court.

One-armed James Deacon, 28, of Tristram Close, Sompting, appeared at Worthing Magistrates' Court this morning (Friday, January 30) charged with aggravated burglary.

Deacon allegedly entered a flat in Shelley Road in the early hours of Monday, January 26. The court heard Deacon had a baseball bat and a second man had a shot-gun. Both men allegedly jumped from the window of the first-floor flat which left Deacon with a broken arm.

Police arrested Deacon outside the flat but they are still searching for the gun-man.

Deacon, who appeared in court in a wheelchair and was flanked by security officers, spoke only to confirm his name.

He did not enter a plea to the charge but was remanded in custody before his next appearance, which will be at Chichester Crown Court on April 23.
