Man lost at sea after going overboard

Lifeboat volunteers undertook a fruitless search for a man who went overboard yesterday.

The two all weather lifeboats from the Shoreham and Newhaven branches of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) were launched yesterday after reports of a crewman overboard from a cargo ship in the shipping lanes of the English Channel, 24 miles from the coast.

The Newhaven lifeboat was launched first followed by Shoreham lifeboat at about 8.15pm.

They joined the coastguard helicopter, which was already searching for the man.

The lifeboats carried out search patterns around the area where the man was last sighted.

After nearly four hours of searching the lifeboats and helicopter were stood down.

The man was sadly not found.

According to the RNLI this is the third launch this year for Shoreham and Newhaven lifeboats to reports of men overboard from vessels. One was found but two were not, despite extensive searches.
