Man rescued from blaze

An elderly man was taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation after a fire in a Bognor Regis care home.

The man was rescued by firefighters when they were called to tackle the blaze in a second floor bedroom at Fairhaven Residential Care Home in Clarence Road.

They found him slumped outside his room and carried him down the stairs.

The alarm was raised at 2.53pm on Tuesday.

It took fire crews less than 15 minutes to put out the flames.

Some 15 firefighters from Bognor and Chichester were called to the scene.

The cause of the blaze was being looked at yesterday by the fire investigation officer.

The firefighters praised the actions of the home's staff in minimising the effects of the blaze. They swiftly evacuated all the other residents amid a textbook response to such an emergency.
