The Newhaven Coastguard was called to the Fisherman’s Quay at around 10am on Thursday, April 21 to reports of a crewman losing his footing while descending a ladder.

A spokesperson for the coastguard said the man had missed the last few steps of the ladder on the trawler and landed badly, severely injuring his ankle.

The spokesperson continued: “When the coastguard team arrived, the crewman was in the wheelhouse with a fast response paramedic receiving pain relief.

“An ambulance crew arrived and the man’s ankle was bandaged while stronger pain relief was administered.

“With the coastguard’s assistance, the crewman managed to hop to the rear deck area where he was put on a stretcher and slowly manoeuvred around the vessel.

“Thankfully, being close to high tide, team members on the vessel were able to pass the stretcher to team members ashore, although with the cluttered deck of a trawler it was still not an easy task.
