He said, “Over the last few years I have just run to keep myself fit but recently cancer has affected many of my friends and family so enough is enough.

“It’s time to put the effort in for a good cause to help get rid of this terrible disease.

“So this year I have set myself this daunting challenge to try and raise £5,000 for Cancer Research UK.”

To date he has raised more than £2,100 through donations to his JustGiving page.

He expects to reach 400 training miles this year before the first marathon and hopes to beat his personal best time of 3:47:13.

He added, “Training is the hardest part.

“You need to stay focused, even in the harshest of weather conditions, and the Seaford winter certainly offers that environment.

“I’m on track though and can’t wait to be on the starting line in Milan on the third of April. To make a donation, visit the website: uk.virginmoneygiving.com/JasonMartin

Over the last 40 years, cancer survival rates in the UK have doubled. In the 1970s just a quarter of people survived. Today that figure is half.

Cancer Research UK’s ambition is to accelerate progress and see three quarters of patients surviving the disease within the next 20 years.

This requires the charity to set an ambitious new agenda for cancer research, substantially increasing its investment, pioneering new approaches and bringing new disciplines to bear on the cancer problem. Cancer Research UK don’t receive government funding. Every pound it spends on life-saving research comes from fundraisers like Jason.

The charity says the money can go a long way to make a difference. For example £80 will enable a man to take part in a two-year study into prostate cancer.
