Marbles tradition returns to Battle

IN THE shadow of Battle Abbey, local teams will compete in the annual marbles competition on Good Friday (April 6), organised by the Battle and District Chamber of Commerce.

Standards of the game have improved greatly over the years, but to the great disappointment of organisers it was turned down as an Olympic sport.

Nonetheless, local pubs and clubs are undeterred, entering teams of five players to compete in both the marbles and the fancy dress competitions.

Around 20 teams are expected to take part with ‘flick-off’ at 10am.

In particular, the fancy dress competition becomes ever more competitive and last year the Lego Men and the Fruit and Veg teams drew the best response as a result of many hours of secret inventiveness.

Teams cannot be entered on the day, but if you are not a member of a team you can always try your luck on the ‘all-comers board’ for spectators of all ages.

The children’s Easter Bonnet competition will take place at 11.30am with the free children’s marble scramble immediately afterwards, with one thousand up for grabs.

Please note that if you have children who want to enter the bonnet competition there is no entry fee, but organisers must know beforehand so an Easter egg can be organised for every child taking part.

Call Tamzin Gray on 01424 775169 or email [email protected] to register your child in the competition.

Cups and medals will be handed out at noon.
