A number of events are being arranged to mark the occasion.

Simon Alexander, chairman of the Battle-based Concorde 1066 committee, said: “1066 is a date known around the world, although the actual date of the Battle of Hastings, October 14, is less well-known.

“My colleagues and I on the Concorde 1066 committee are determined to change that, and ensure that the date is suitably marked here in Battle next year.

“We are producing a 56-page souvenir booklet to mark the day, and are arranging a number of events on the actual date of the anniversary, Friday, October 14, 2016.

“Plans include a parade and performance by the Military band of the Brigade of Ghurkhas along Battle High Street and in front of the Abbey Gatehouse, a church service, and a schools event. We will also be holding an evening reception for local, Norman and other international guests in the Abbots Hall in Battle Abbey.”

A website, www.concorde1066.co.uk, has been launched, which will be updated regularly.

Simon added: “This is a really important date in English history, and we are determined that it will be commemorated and marked here in Battle, where all the action actually took place on that fateful day in 1066.”
