Marlipins open

THE Marlipins Museum, in Shoreham High Street, was officially reopened by West Sussex County Council chairman Margaret Johnson on Thursday.

Mrs Johnson rang in the museum's new season by sounding a bell, which originally came from HMS Shoreham in 1931.

She said: "It is an honour and a delight to be here today, not only to launch the new season, but also for the culmination of a long project."

Curator Helen Poole said the museum had been unofficially open since last May, following an extensive refurbishment programme and the building of a new annexe.

Thursday's opening ceremony began with a trumpet fanfare by students from Boundstone Community College, Lancing.

Mrs Poole said: "This time last year, we were still knee-deep in rubbish, but I am delighted to say that, today, we are able to open it properly."

She thanked the volunteers at the museum for all their help, the Shoreham Society, Adur District Council, Viridor Waste Management and the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The museum has still got displays on Shoreham Beach's film industry and the RAF radar station at Truleigh Hill.

There are also exhibitions on Shoreham's maritime history and the recent archaeological dig on the Ropetackle site.
