Mary opens garden for RSPCA

THE tinkling sound of a cascade greeted visitors to Mary Bristow's tranquil garden in Ellerslie Lane on Sunday.

As chairman of the local branch of the RSPCA, Mary had opened her garden to the public to raise funds.

Five dogs and five cats enjoy the garden normally but on Sunday afternoon it was plant-lovers who roamed through the vine, rose and wisteria-covered arbour, admired the planting of Mary's shingle bed and explored the furthest reaches of the extended garden with its apple trees.

Since moving in 15 years ago, Mary has made many changes to the garden in addition to having a sun lounge built on to the house from which to enjoy the view.

Mary asked a farmer to plough the land when she extended her garden.

Though her hopes of creating a wildflower meadow were dashed because the soil was too rich, the far end of her land is still an effective wildlife garden.

Foxes are regular visitors.

Sunday's human visitors helped raise 352.
