Masons donate to young carers

Freemasons have donated hundreds of pounds towards a project which looks after children caring for their sick relatives.

Members of the Thornton Lodge handed more than 600 to the Young Carers scheme, which is run by the Association of Carers.

The presentation was held in Ted and Christine Groves' back garden and the money given by Colin Dann, assistant provincial Grand Master for Sussex.

The lodge has pledged to raise more money and hopes to donate a further 2,000 in the future.

Jo Oliver, fundraising manager for the Association of Carers, said: "I am extremely grateful to the lodge for picking Young Carers as their charity of the year. The service is really beneficial to those who use it and we hope over time we will be able to help more carers aged between seven and 18.

"The project's original funding from the county council has nearly finished so this help has come at a perfect time especially as we are now having more young carers join the association."

The Young Carers Project was launched last October and offers respite to youngsters looking after a sick relative.
